4 Issues That Can Keep You from Getting Dental Implants

If you are among the roughly 178 million Americans who are missing at least one tooth, you may be considering getting dental implants to complete the look of your smile. This is the tooth replacement option of choice for many dentists and patients alike since they’re durable, long-lasting, and blend in seamlessly with the rest of your smile. Unfortunately, several things can prevent you from getting dental implants. Read on to learn about four issues that will need to be corrected before you’re able to move forward with the procedure.

Issue #1. Inadequate Bone Density

These titanium posts are the only tooth replacement option that also replaces the roots of teeth. They do this by being surgically inserted into the jawbone where they fuse with it through a process called osseointegration over four to six months. For this reason, it’s important to have a strong, healthy jawbone before you proceed with surgery. If it’s been a while since you lost your teeth, your jawbone may have begun to erode due to lack of stimulation. Your dentist will take X-rays so they can determine if you’ll need a bone graft to build up your jawbone enough to support implants.

Issue #2. Unhealthy Gums

The dental implant procedure starts with your dentist making an incision in the gums so they can easily access your jawbone. If you have oral health issues like gum disease, these will need to be treated beforehand. If not, you may experience implant failure or other complications.

Issue #3. Bad Oral Hygiene

As you probably know, brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing at least once is key to keeping your smile healthy and avoiding oral health problems. Though dental implants can’t get cavities like your natural teeth, that doesn’t mean that you no longer have to take care of your smile. Decay on your remaining teeth may lead to additional tooth loss, which may cause jawbone erosion and will warrant the need for more implants. Additionally, excessive levels of harmful oral bacteria may contribute to gum disease.

Issue #4. Use of Tobacco Products

If you smoke cigarettes or use other tobacco products, this sharply increases your risk of developing gum disease, dry mouth, and dental decay. It also makes you more likely to develop oral or other forms of cancer. Smoking may also impede osseointegration and cause your implants to fail. If you need help quitting, speak with your dentist, therapist, doctor, or other health professionals about the available resources.

If you want dental implants, it’s important to take care of the above issues. By doing this, you’ll soon be on your way to a healthier, more beautiful smile!
