What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are custom dental restorations that have been handcrafted in a lab by skilled ceramists. They're made of ultra-thin layers of fine dental porcelain that are designed to fit perfectly on the front-facing surface of your teeth. In the process, they cover a wide range of imperfections – from stubborn stains to noticeable chips and significant gaps.

The Process of Getting Veneers

The very first step of the treatment process is the consultation, which is when you will sit down with Dr. Crescenzo, Dr. Montalbano, or Dr. Vitello to discuss your dream smile. If they determine that veneers are the best cosmetic dental treatment for you, then they will create your custom treatment plan and help you pick the ideal size, shape, and shade of each veneer.

The next step is prepping your teeth for veneers, which involves removing a sliver of enamel, taking impressions of your teeth, and bonding temporary ones in place. We’ll send everything to the artisans at the dental lab so they can craft your final veneers. As soon as they are ready, we’ll call you back to our office so we can secure them in place. At that point, your dream smile will be a reality!

Understanding the Cost of Veneers

Sadly, we can’t provide you with an accurate estimate of the cost of veneers here. After all, there are several factors we need to consider first, including the number of teeth you want to fix, what dental imperfections are present, and the state of your oral health. The good news is that we can provide you with a number at your consultation, and we can also review the details of flexible financing at that time.

Veneers FAQs

Are Veneers Permanent?

Porcelain veneers aren’t actually permanent; they must be replaced over time. That said, the process of placing them is considered irreversible.

To ensure your veneers fit well, a dentist removes small bits of your enamel before placement. (Doing so helps the shells adhere and not jut out.) This removed enamel doesn’t grow back, so treated teeth will always need crowns or veneers going forward. You’ll otherwise suffer from a heightened risk of sensitive teeth, tooth infections, etc.

Can I (Still) Drink Coffee with Veneers?

Thankfully, you can still drink coffee after getting veneers. The occasional “cup of joe” won’t interfere with or disrupt your treatment results.

Don’t forget that veneers are made of stain-resistant porcelain. The latter is a non-porous material, so particles from dark-colored foods and drinks won’t slip beneath your shells much. That means you can drink coffee normally without fear that it’ll stain your veneers.

Of course, “stain-resistant” isn’t the same thing as “stain-proof.” You should avoid excessive coffee consumption to ensure your veneers last as long as possible. If you don’t, your shells could suffer some discoloration and require early replacement.

Can Veneers Widen My Smile?

As a matter of fact, yes – veneers can widen your smile. They’d then make your grin more attractive as they help your teeth look more balanced.

You see, veneers are great at widening narrow arches. They can make rows of teeth look fuller than they actually are, especially when tailored to you. You’ll just need to ensure your shells have the appropriate size and design.

If your grin needs extensive changes, though, you may want to consider braces instead. They can make comprehensive adjustments that widen your smile.

Do Veneers Feel Like Real Teeth?

Once they’ve been placed, veneers generally “feel” like real teeth. It’s to the point that most patients don’t even notice the shells when talking or eating.

Don’t forget that veneers are customized just for you. Having been based on impressions of your teeth, they “match” with each treated tooth and blend in seamlessly. You shouldn’t “feel” them protrude uncomfortably from your mouth. Instead, they’ll be so unobtrusive that you’ll likely forget you have them.

At the same time, note that the porcelain used for veneers is very smooth. It won’t irritate the soft tissues inside your mouth, nor will it feel “off” to your tongue.
